Diagnostics: finding out what the light actually means

An engine management light tells you the car has recorded a fault. It does not tell you what the fault is, how serious it is, or what it will cost. A code reader gives a code; working out what that code is really pointing at is the job.

Codes are read at your address, and then explained in plain English — what has been recorded, what is most likely causing it, whether the car is safe to drive in the meantime, and what putting it right involves. You get the actual code as well, so nothing rests on trust.

Codes are cleared once the cause is dealt with. Clearing a light without fixing what set it off just means it comes back, usually at a worse moment.

Brakes

Pads, discs, calipers and brake fluid. Grinding, squealing, a spongy pedal, a pull to one side, or a handbrake that will not hold on a hill are all worth having looked at rather than waiting for the MOT. Brake work is done at your address and the vehicle is not handed back until it stops properly.

Clutches and timing belts

The bigger jobs. A slipping clutch or a biting point that has crept to the top of the pedal travel needs doing before it strands you. A timing belt is a scheduled replacement — ignoring it is how an engine destroys itself, and the repair costs many times the belt.

Both can be handled mobile where the location allows it, or the vehicle is recovered to base for the work. You are told which before anything is booked, because it changes what the day looks like for you.

Mobile welding for MOT repairs

Corrosion on a sill, a subframe or an exhaust is one of the more common MOT failures, and it is a repair that normally means the car being off the road at a workshop. It can be welded at your address instead, and the vehicle re-presented for its retest.

Anything that is not on this list

Batteries, alternators, starters, exhausts, suspension, steering, cooling systems, wipers, bulbs, sensors. If a job cannot sensibly be done on a driveway, you will be told that plainly rather than after it has been started.

Not sure what is wrong? Choose “Something else” when you book and describe what the car is doing — the noise, when it happens, whether a light is on. That description is what decides which parts come out with the van, so the more you write the better the first visit goes.

What it costs

Every job is quoted before it starts. There is a £45 call-out charge, confirmed at booking, and payment is taken on site when the work is done, by card or cash.
