What happens when you call

You ring, you say where you are and what the car is doing, and you get told how long we will be. Not “sometime today” — an actual answer. Once we set off you can follow the van on a live map with a moving ETA, so you know how long you are standing there.

Most roadside jobs are diagnosed and dealt with on the spot: a flat battery, a failed alternator, a punctured tyre, a fuel problem, an immobiliser that will not release. Where the fault needs a workshop or a part that is not on the van, the vehicle is recovered rather than left.

Roadside repair, or recovery

These are two different jobs and it is worth knowing which you are getting.

• Roadside repair means the fault is fixed where the vehicle is and you drive away in it. Cheaper and quicker, and it is the outcome we aim for.
• Recovery means the vehicle is loaded and taken — to your home, to a garage, or to us. That is the answer for anything unsafe to drive, anything needing parts, and anything with a fault that cannot be read at the roadside.

Breakdowns do not keep office hours

Servicing and tyre work run to normal working hours. Breakdown and recovery is 24 hours, including nights and weekends, because that is when being stuck actually happens — on the A35 at eleven at night, or on a lane outside Beaminster on a Sunday.

What it costs

There is a £45 call-out charge, confirmed before you book. Recovery is priced on distance and what is involved, and you are told the figure before anything is loaded. Payment is on site when the job is done, card or cash.

No membership, no annual subscription, no waiting on hold to a national call centre that then subcontracts the job to somebody local anyway.

While you wait

If you are on a live carriageway, get out of the vehicle and behind a barrier if there is one, and put the hazards on. If you are on a rural lane in the dark, stay visible. Nothing on the vehicle is worth standing in traffic for.
